Grantee Highlight Series

Sustainable Grand

Sustainable Grand is a nonprofit dedicated to making Grand County a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly place to live and work. Sustainable Grand supports households and businesses in lowering energy bills through promoting energy assessments, financial assistance, and providing educational programming about reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This strengthens economic resilience and environmental stewardship across our community.

This year, Sustainable Grand received support through the Grand Foundation&amp;rsquo;s Board of County Commissioners, Town of Winter Park, Town of Grand Lake, and Town of Granby grants, enabling the organization to expand its outreach and deepen its impact countywide.

&amp;ldquo;The Grand Foundation grants have enabled us (through marketing and outreach) to triple the number of energy assessment program participants in 2025 vs 2024. This has significantly increased our impact throughout Grand County, reducing energy bills and helping protect the planet,&amp;rdquo; said Executive Director, Helen Brown.

Grand Foundation grants also supported the development of&amp;nbsp;SustainableGrand.org&amp;nbsp;as a community resource for energy information. The site offers a rebate calculator, contractor lists, free energy coaching, and up-to-date educational resources. In 2025, over 3,300 residents accessed information through the website, 58 households completed energy assessments and implemented improvements, and over 100 community members attended workshops focused on practical, low-cost energy-saving strategies. These efforts contributed to an estimated reduction of 1,337 metric tons of CO₂e: the equivalent of removing 302 gas-powered vehicles from the road!

Supporting partners like Sustainable Grand who are helping residents save money and build a more sustainable future for Grand County represents the Grand Foundation&amp;rsquo;s mission of proactively addressing environmental needs. Sustainable Grand&amp;rsquo;s work demonstrates how local action can deliver measurable environmental impact while strengthening the well-being of our entire community.

New Year, New Members!

Welcoming Three Community Leaders to the Grand Foundation Board of Directors

After 15 years as a weekend &amp;ldquo;resident&amp;rdquo;, Bob Boynton has called Grand County home full-time since 2009. Bob enjoys all of what Grand County has to offer along with his wife, Jan, their 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Bob has been deeply involved in the community, particularly through his 15 years of service with the Fraser River Valley Lions Club, where he has held leadership roles.

Bob brings an unique perspective to our board: he grew up on a dairy farm in northern California, then translated those skills into a career in agricultural academia at Purdue and Cornell Universities and executive leadership at Leprino Foods.

Bob was interested in joining the Board after observing &amp;ldquo;the tremendous contribution the Grand Foundation made to our community&amp;rdquo;. He is eager to contribute to the Foundation&amp;rsquo;s mission and help advance its objectives moving forward.

Fun fact: Bob has written and published two children&amp;rsquo;s books inspired by family members and his beloved dog, Clancy.

Tim Thomson&amp;rsquo;s roots in Grand County run deep. His family moved to Kremmling in 1985, and after graduating from West Grand High School, Tim pursued animal science and farrier studies while competing on collegiate rodeo teams. After completing his education, life brought Tim and his wife, Nellie, back to Grand County, where they are raising their two daughters.

Now in his 18th year managing Pinto Valley Ranch, Tim understands the importance of stewardship&amp;mdash;both of the land and of the community. While his professional life centers on caring for the ranch and raising show sheep, Tim sees board service as a way to extend his impact beyond the property lines.Tim joined the Grand Foundation Board to give back to the community and

increase his footprint on the Grand County social landscape.

Fun fact: Tim&amp;rsquo;s children are sixth-generation Kremmling residents on his wife&amp;rsquo;s side.

Matthew Reed-Tolonen is a longtime Grand County resident, parent, and dedicated community volunteer. He and his family live in Grand County, where his children are sixth-generation locals, and much of their life together revolves around the outdoors and community activities.

Matthew owns two local companies, Timberline Snow Management and Down to Grade: Terrain &amp;amp; Surface Solutions. He serves on the Headwaters Trails Alliance and Grand Lake Recreation District Boards. In 2020, Matthew and his family lost their home in the East Troublesome Fire. While it was an incredibly difficult experience, the outpouring of support they received from neighbors, friends, and the broader Grand County community shaped his perspective on service, connection, and giving back.

Matthew joined the Grand Foundation Board because &amp;ldquo;After experiencing firsthand how people in this county show up for one another in times of need, I wanted to be involved in an organization that helps strengthen those connections and support people, programs, and nonprofits across Grand County in meaningful and lasting ways.&amp;rdquo;

Fun fact: When he&amp;rsquo;s not working or chasing his kids around at races and local events, Matt is usually running heavy equipment &amp;mdash; graders, loaders, or snowcats &amp;mdash; and he genuinely enjoys it.

New Series: Grantee Highlights!

We&amp;rsquo;re excited to launch Grantee Highlights, a new series that showcases a different Grand County nonprofit in each issue and highlights the meaningful impact of Grand Foundation grants throughout our community.

Grand County Historical Association

The Grand Foundation is proud to highlight the Grand County Historical Association (GCHA), a longstanding steward of our community&amp;rsquo;s past and a direct contributor to the county&amp;rsquo;s cultural and educational vitality. Through the operation of four unique museums, GCHA protects the stories, artifacts, and historic structures that define Grand County&amp;rsquo;s identity while creating meaningful educational opportunities for both residents and visitors.

This year, GCHA received support from the Board of County Commissioners, the Towns of Granby, Fraser, Winter Park, and Grand Lake grants, and through the Grand Foundation&amp;rsquo;s Annual Grant program.

&amp;ldquo;These funds are appreciated and utilized to continue to operate and maintain our four museums, as well as contributing to our ability to provide programming that benefits not only the local community, but visitors as well,&amp;rdquo; says Executive Director Shanna Ganne.

We are proud our funding supports preservation efforts, and ensures that historic collections, and environments remain protected and accessible. Grand Foundation dollars also helped sustain year-round programming, expanding opportunities for schools, families, and heritage tourism participants to connect with local history. With more than 5,000 residents and visitors served, GCHA continues to offer a powerful reminder that history is not only worth saving, but also worth experiencing. Their work strengthens community identity, contributes to local tourism, and ensures that historic spaces and stories remain alive for future generations.

The Grand Foundation is honored to support partners like the Grand County Historical Association who enrich Grand County not just by preserving its past, but by inspiring its present and shaping a more informed and connected future.

Thank You for the Years of Service

Retiring Board Members

This year, three long-standing Board Members&amp;mdash;Jim Kennedy, Trinna Tressler, and Mike Ritschard&amp;mdash;retired from the Grand Foundation Board. We would like to take this opportunity to recognize their immense contributions over the past decade.

Thank you to Jim, a pillar of the Grand County community, served as Secretary of the Board from 2019&amp;ndash;2023 and as Vice Chair from 2023 until his retirement in June 2025. He contributed to many committees and was instrumental in the creation of the HOPE Fund, focused on mental and behavioral health.After 11 years on the Board, Jim (Doc) Kennedy reflects: &amp;ldquo;I have always believed that &amp;lsquo;charity begins at home,&amp;rsquo; not in faraway places. A caring community knows where the needs are. For more than a decade, I had the privilege to serve an organization that lives this ideal. The Board and the Staff, led by Megan Ledin, serve with a full commitment to this ideal. No one serves on the Board for self, only for purpose. The list of accomplishments goes on and on. If not for a life decision to leave the county, I would commit to serve on one of the finest boards ever. It has been an honor.&amp;rdquo;Thank you to Trinna Tressler, who retired after more than 10 years of service.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Since joining the Board in 2014, Trinna shared, &amp;ldquo;The Grand Foundation provided an avenue to give back to a community which provided many outdoor and social opportunities to us.&amp;rdquo; She contributed her time and insight to the Donor Development, Annual Grants, Strategic Planning, and Marketing committees, and co-founded the Treckles Family Fund. We are grateful for her leadership, generosity, and lasting impact on the Foundation and the wider community.

Lastly, thank you to Mike Ritschard as he retires from the Board after more than 10 years of service. Since joining in 2014, Mike has contributed his insight to several key committees, including the Blue Valley Ranch Youth Fund and the Grand County Commissioners Donor-Advised Fund. He also served as Chair of the Board from 2019 through 2021, helping guide the Foundation through important years of growth and community impact.Mike played an instrumental role in the Citizens for a Safe Highway 9 Project Donor-Advised Fund and the 100-Year Anniversary of the Middle Park Fair &amp;amp; Rodeo. His influence strengthened the Foundation&amp;rsquo;s connection to the west end of the county and supported meaningful progress.

Thank you, Jim, Trinna, and Mike, for your service. Your contributions will continue to make a difference for years to come.

    <description>A Note of Reflection from our Executive Director

For over 29 years, the Grand Foundation has focused on supporting the Grand County Community. Even with this mission nothing could have prepared us for what happened on October 21st, 2020 with the East Troublesome Fire. Within hours, the fire destroyed a large percentage of our community&amp;rsquo;s landscape. The outpouring of generosity from around the community, state, and nation filled our shattered hearts with hope and love.

We were and continue to be amazed by the human spirit to give, to care and to support one another. It is how we knew we could get through, rebuild, and survive this tragedy.

We will be stronger, braver, and kinder as a result of it.

8 Tips for Seeking Grants from Community Foundations

In June, The Chronicle of Philanthropy published this article, a seven-minute read. We agree with all eight tips, including a couple of our most suggested: &amp;quot;make your proposal stand out&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;show results in tangible ways.&amp;quot; The article emphasizes that seeking grants from us is not just about the money.

25th Annual Grand Classic Golf Tournament

The 25th Annual Grand Classic Golf Tournament was a &amp;quot;Hole-In-One&amp;quot; success, featuring perfect weather, fantastic people, and unforgettable memories. Over June 14th and 15th, we enjoyed two days of golfing at Grand Elk Golf Club and Pole Creek Golf Club, concluding with a BBQ awards ceremony, live music, and a silent auction.

In collaboration with the Fraser Valley Metropolitan Recreation District, which supports youth programs, and the Grand Foundation Grants&amp;#39; Program, this year&amp;#39;s tournament raised nearly $150,000. This remarkable achievement was made possible by our generous sponsors, dedicated golfers, enthusiastic volunteers, and supportive donors.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us, whether near or far, and contributed to the ongoing success of this event. Your support continues to make the Grand Classic an exceptional experience year after year!

    <description>Connecting Residents with Mental and Behavioral Health Resources

The H.O.P.E. (Healing Opportunities through Prevention Efforts) Fund was established in July 2022 in response to a troubling increase in suicides and overdoses within the Grand County Community. To address the crisis, families affected by these tragedies set up memorial funds through the Grand Foundation. Their collective goal was to create a dedicated fund aimed at supporting mental and behavioral health initiatives in the county.

In its initial months, a committee comprised of family members and local stakeholders was formed to tackle these pressing issues. After three meetings, the committee recognized the necessity of a centralized resource for mental and behavioral health support.

This led to the creation of BuildingHopeGrand.com, a website dedicated to providing comprehensive mental and behavioral health resources for the community. The Grand Foundation&amp;#39;s newly-added marketing assistant was instrumental in getting this $45,000 project across the finish line in July 2023.

The committee also identified several key areas of &amp;quot;low-hanging fruit,&amp;quot; or unmet needs, that required immediate attention and support. These areas included:

Office Space &amp;amp; Housing for Providers

To support mental health providers, we rented an office at Winter Park Station under a two-year lease, offering the space at no cost to providers for the first six months. In 2023, the rent for this office was $7,200, with an additional $1,000 spent on utilities, internet, and office upgrades such as paint and furniture. The total investment in this initiative through May 15, 2024, is approximately $41,650. Additionally, we are seeking to purchase housing that can be used as a home base for providers from the Front Range, allowing them to stay locally while offering their services.

Scholarship Program

To date, we have provided approximately $95,603 in scholarship grants, benefiting 117 unique individuals. These grants support providers and individuals who do not qualify for, or have fully utilized, the Grand County Rural Health Network&amp;#39;s Mental Health vouchers and Employee Assistance programs.

Behavioral Navigator Outreach Program

The H.O.P.E. Fund has also committed $10,000 to support a Behavioral Navigator at Middle Park Health.

Mental Health First Aid Training

We worked with Mind Springs Health to fund Makena Line&amp;#39;s training as a certified Mental Health First Aid instructor. Through this partnership, free Mental Health First Aid training and mentoring programs are being offered across the county. This initiative includes both community-wide sessions and training for individual businesses. To date, we have funded 12 classes, totaling over $25,000.

The Need is Great. We&amp;#39;re Not Done Yet.&amp;nbsp;

We&amp;#39;re continuing to increase awareness of BuildingHopeGrand.com through press releases, social media posts, and distributing business cards and other branded materials around the entire county. We&amp;#39;re regularly making updates to BuildingHopeGrand.com, ensuring information about individual applications, provider applications, office space availability, and other resources remains current and accessible.

The largest challenge we&amp;#39;ve faced is the overwhelming need for mental and behavioral health support within our community. Despite this, our committee has achieved significant progress in the nearly two years since its inception.

If you would like to support the H.O.P.E. Fund&amp;#39;s continuing efforts, donations can be made online or by contacting us.

In Loving Memory of Roger Hedlund

Contributed by Fraser Valley Metropolitan Recreation District, Grand County Search and Rescue, Grand Foundation, and Headwaters Trails Alliance

On Tuesday April 9th, the heart of Grand County grew a little heavier as we bid farewell to a truly remarkable soul, Roger Hedlund. For over four decades, Roger dedicated himself to the enrichment and betterment of our community, not just through his entrepreneurial ventures such as Home James, Mad Adventures, Trailblazer Snowmobile Tours, and Elevation Pizza but through his relentless commitment to service and leadership. His passing leaves a void in the fabric of our community that will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

Roger was a beacon of hope and progress in Grand County, having lent his expertise and passion to numerous organizations including the Fraser Valley Metropolitan Recreation District, Grand County Search &amp;amp; Rescue, Grand Foundation, Headwaters Trails Alliance, Grand County Advocates, Grand County Pet Pals, Colorado Headwaters Land Trust, Grand Youth Adventures, and Grand Huts Association. He was also the visionary behind the Oslo Foundation, focusing on critical areas such as early childhood education and social justice, embodying his belief that active involvement is key to community growth. Named Citizen of the Year by his peers in 2013, his legacy is one of boundless generosity, leadership, youth empowerment, outdoor education, and an unwavering belief in the power of community.

As we mourn the loss of Roger, we are reminded of his philosophy: &amp;ldquo;It&amp;#39;s a wonderful feeling to give back to the community as much as they have given to me.&amp;rdquo; In honoring his memory, let us support his family during this time of grief and continue his work in strengthening the bonds of our community. For those in need, The H.O.P.E. Fund stands as a testament to Roger&amp;#39;s compassion, offering support for mental health needs (details available at BuildingHopeGrand.com) alongside the Colorado Crisis Line at 1-844-493-8255. Roger Hedlund&amp;#39;s impact will forever be cherished, and his absence profoundly felt. Rest in peace, dear friend and humanitarian. Your legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.

Thank You for a Successful 21st Annual Grand Gala

The 21st Annual Grand Gala, held at Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains, was a great success Saturday April 20th, 2024. This year&amp;#39;s theme was Black and White giving Grand County a chance to show off their black ties and high heels. The secondary beneficiary was Grand Kids Learning Center to help in support of their mission to expand and improve early childhood education in Grand County. The event raised more than $100,000, a testament to the dedication that Grand County businesses and residents have for their community.

Thank you to all of our Sponsors, Donors, Volunteers and Guests for your continued support of the Grand Foundation and the Grand County Community and for embracing our commitment to Give Where You Live, Work, And Play!

    <description>Thank you for your generosity and dedication to the Grand Foundation throughout 2023. Support from organizations, foundations, municipalities, and individuals like you makes what we do possible!

From the beginning in 1996, the Grand Foundation has been here to improve the quality of life for residents and guests in Grand County. We work everyday to proactively address current and future needs in the areas of Health &amp;amp; Human Services, Arts &amp;amp; Culture, Education, Sports &amp;amp; Recreation, and Environment.

This year has been as busy as ever for the Grand Foundation.

We had the unique opportunity, thanks to Winter Park Resort and Alterra Mountain Company, to auction off 100 Pioneer Express Lift Chairs to raise over $70,000 for the H.O.P.E. (Healing Opportunities through Prevention Efforts) Fund.

The H.O.P.E. Fund is dedicated to supporting and expanding Grand County mental health advocacy and services, substance abuse prevention and recovery services, and access to outdoor recreation as a protective factor to support mental and physical well-being.

We have worked on expanding&amp;nbsp;BuildingHopeGrand.com, a one stop shop mental heath website for Grand County.

We are honored to be presented in the Paradise Paradox documentary, a film about mental health in mountain resort towns, available soon on streaming services!

In 2023 we donated the Black Bear Lodge to the Grand County Housing Authority. Providing affordable units for wildfire families and Grand County workforce.

We continue to support the housing needs of Grand County with the Winter Park and Grand County Housing Assistance Funds, awarding out over $200,000 in 2023 in rental and down payment assistance grants.

In addition we continue to collaborate with other organizations on housing infrastructure projects.

On Colorado Gives Day you helped us raise over $176,000 for the Grand Foundation, supporting many of the projects and programs we are working on.

The annual Grand Gala, Grand Classic Golf Tournament, Casino Royale Night, and Bags for Brammer Cornhole Tournament each supporting our community.

And that was just the beginning, so much more was accomplished thanks to you generosity!

We are amazed by Grand County&amp;rsquo;s ability to step up for each other no matter what we are faced with. We live in such a special place and we celebrate the passion our residents have for this community.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

    <title>The Gift of Giving: How to make giving back an effortless part of daily life</title>
    <link>https://grandfoundation.dnn4less.net/News/ID/20/The-Gift-of-Giving-How-to-make-giving-back-an-effortless-part-of-daily-life</link>
    <description>Sometimes it takes a big event&amp;mdash;like the pandemic, or the East Troublesome Fire&amp;mdash;to help us see how much we need each other as a community, and how much every gift, donation, or volunteer hour can make an impact. Sometimes it&amp;#39;s just the warmth of the holidays and the gratitude it stirs in us that prompts us to give.

However, giving is something that can enrich not just others&amp;#39; lives but also our own lives every single day. Studies have long shown that giving makes us feel good. Helping others raises our endorphin levels, reduces our stress, and promotes longevity.

Here&amp;#39;s how to make giving a regular part of your daily life.

Get to know the impact of your giving.&amp;nbsp;

Writing a check can feel meaningless when you don&amp;#39;t understand how or where your funds are used. But when you realize that you&amp;#39;re helping plant trees on a burned mountainside, filling a hungry child&amp;#39;s backpack with nutritious food for the weekend, or helping a small business keep its doors open, then donations become more rewarding and meaningful. The Grand Foundation annual report outlines in detail how monies are spent and what that support looks like in the community.

Start small and be consistent.&amp;nbsp;

Gifts don&amp;#39;t have to be monumental to be impactful, and in fact, giving more regularly increases the feel-good effects of giving. A weekly gift of $5 can add up to a substantial gift in a year for many of our smaller organizations and funding initiatives.

Make it automatic.

Digital wallet apps like Paypal as well as automatic and online banking options make giving easy and painless. Regular contributions make it easier for organizations to count on and receive funds without hosting costly fundraisers or expensive marketing initiatives. You can set up a regular monthly donation to the Grand Foundation here.

Consider non-cash gifts.&amp;nbsp;

If your plan for giving is about leaving a legacy, the Grand Foundation can help create lasting change with your gifts of old life insurance policies, real estate, and other assets.&amp;nbsp;

Share your passion.&amp;nbsp;

We tend to share generously in support of causes that are meaningful to us personally. Whether it&amp;#39;s a love of open spaces, independent businesses, the arts, or helping kids and families thrive, you can support those specific passions by making a restricted gift with the Grand Foundation to earmark your donation.

Re-think what giving looks like.&amp;nbsp;

You don&amp;#39;t have to take out your checkbook to give gifts that make an impact. Donating goods or items, volunteering your time, attending a charity event, or even buying a Grand Pass (with access to skiing, golfing, summer activities, and more) all help support the Grand Foundation.

Reflect with gratitude.&amp;nbsp;

Reflecting with appreciation on all the good in your life will impact your generosity&amp;mdash;grateful people have been shown to be more helpful, kind, supportive, and altruistic. Start and end your day by jotting down just three things you are grateful for in a notebook and your sense of wellbeing and altruism will soar.

Don&amp;#39;t save giving just for certain times of the year or major events&amp;mdash;tapping into our generous nature not only improves our community and the lives of others but our own lives as well. For giving opportunity ideas, visit our giving page.

    <title>Strength Through Adversity: How the wildfire disaster brought out the best of Grand County</title>
    <link>https://grandfoundation.dnn4less.net/News/ID/21/Strength-Through-Adversity-How-the-wildfire-disaster-brought-out-the-best-of-Grand-County</link>
    <description>On October 21, 2020&amp;mdash;one year ago today&amp;mdash;the East Troublesome Fire swept through our community and blazed an unimaginable path of devastation. But that disaster also kindled an overwhelming connection and warmth in Grand County.&amp;nbsp;

Strangers drove to Costco and brought up bundles of warm coats and boots. Ordinary citizens organized meals, donation centers, and work bees. Those who&amp;rsquo;d lost everything in the fire were signing up to help other evacuees in any way they could. Countless dollars flowed in to help neighbors, ranchers, and businesses whose worlds changed in a heartbeat.&amp;nbsp;

We were already in the midst of the pandemic and struggling with economic, social, and emotional challenges. Many of us wondered how we&amp;rsquo;d get through it all. As the community continued to give and our hearts began to swell, the answer became very clear: We&amp;rsquo;d get through it together.

Disasters have a way of bringing out the best in us. When tragedy strikes, we instinctively turn toward each other, for help and to help. Feelings of stress and loss lead us to a sense of vulnerability and loss of control. When faced with such emotion, we reach out and seek comfort from others and often in the form of giving. The Grand Foundation saw this overwhelmingly in the days, weeks, and months following the fire.&amp;nbsp;

Donations and help poured in as the magnitude of the fire&amp;rsquo;s impact surfaced: 193,812 acres were burned, 366 homes lost, and nearly $190 million in damage. It is the second most destructive wildfire in our state&amp;rsquo;s history.

But our community and those far beyond its borders rose to the occasion. Within hours, the Grand Foundation had created the Grand County Wildfire Emergency Assistance Fund. Donations flooded in, and to date, the fund has surpassed $3.8 million.

These funds provided those impacted with shelter, basic needs, mental health, counseling, and much more. Rent assistance, help with insurance deductibles, building permits, and legal fees were funded to assist homeowners in rebuilding.

There have been other, less obvious, and more long-term needs the Grand County Wildfire Emergency Assistance Fund is supporting. Everything from free grass seed to water-quality protection, reforestation, nature conservancy, and flood mitigation.

There is something about the collapse of our &amp;ldquo;normal&amp;rdquo; existence that happens after a disaster that awakens the best, most altruistic aspects of ourselves. It&amp;rsquo;s this caring spirit that has enabled us to fund community partners, individuals, and the important work of rebuilding and recovery.&amp;nbsp;

As we reflect on the anniversary of the fire, it is with a sense of appreciation and gratitude for all who have stepped in to serve their friends and neighbors during this time. With thankful hearts, we know you are what makes our county Grand.

    <title>21 Ways You Can be a Good Neighbor in 2021</title>
    <link>https://grandfoundation.dnn4less.net/News/ID/22/21-Ways-You-Can-be-a-Good-Neighbor-in-2021</link>
    <description>Grand County endured so much in 2020, but one of the most amazing lessons we&amp;rsquo;ve taken away has been about the power of community. Whether we ran errands for someone in quarantine, sheltered families who lost their home, donated items for people in need, or simply checked in on each other with a friendly hello from the driveway, it became increasingly clear that when it comes to neighbors, well, we need each other.

Here are some easy ways to bring that neighborly vibe to your own community.&amp;nbsp;

1. Introduce yourself to new neighbors as soon as possible, and bring&amp;nbsp;along a small welcome gift like a bottle of wine or a houseplant.&amp;nbsp;

2. If you&amp;#39;re the one who&amp;#39;s new to the neighborhood, consider inviting your neighbors over for a socially distant drink on the deck. It&amp;#39;s a good way to get to know your neighbors while staying safe.

3. Greet your neighbors when you see them. A simple &amp;quot;hello,&amp;quot; friendly smile, or wave from the driveway can go a long way in building a good neighborly relationship.

4. Make it a point to learn your neighbors&amp;#39; names.

5. Pay attention to your neighbors&amp;#39; work schedules. If they work nights, keeping unnecessary noise to a minimum when they&amp;#39;re likely to be sleeping &amp;mdash; morning and early afternoon &amp;mdash; will be greatly appreciated.

6. Be a responsible pet owner. Making sure your pet isn&amp;#39;t causing excessive noise or encroaching on the neighbors&amp;#39; space. If you take your dog for walks, take along a supply of waste pickup bags so neighbors won&amp;#39;t find &amp;quot;surprises&amp;quot; in their yards.

7. When doing routine outdoor maintenance like shoveling your walkway, offer to do the same for your neighbor while you&amp;#39;re at it.

8. Know your neighbor is going through a difficult time or battling an illness? Bringing over an easy-to-reheat meal can help show your support and reduce one source of stress &amp;mdash; this is especially true if they have young children to cook for.

9. Do your part to keep your neighborhood looking nice. This includes picking up trash from public spaces when possible.

10. Speaking of trash, follow the local trash pickup schedule, and don&amp;#39;t leave your empty trash can &amp;mdash; or worse, an overflowing one &amp;mdash; at the curb for longer than necessary to attract bears and critters.

11. Give your neighbors a heads-up if you&amp;#39;ll be doing a large yard project or a remodel. They&amp;#39;ll appreciate being able to anticipate the extra noise and commotion.&amp;nbsp;

12. If you&amp;#39;re having guests over, make sure they&amp;#39;re not using a neighbors&amp;#39; parking space or blocking a driveway.

13. Pay attention to your yard lights and vehicle headlights to make sure they&amp;#39;re not shining into the neighbors&amp;#39; windows.

14. Especially during stormy winter weather, offer to pick up anything your neighbor needs when you&amp;#39;re going grocery shopping to save them a trip.

15. Attend meetings for your neighborhood association or homeowners&amp;rsquo; association, and do your part to keep it a great place to live.

16. Organize a neighborhood service project like a trail cleanup or doing outdoor chores for elderly residents in the fall.

17. Offer to lend things &amp;mdash; snowblower, household tools, a cup of sugar &amp;mdash; if your neighbor has a need.

18. Taking a walk? Invite your neighbor to join or offer to take their dog with you.&amp;nbsp;

19. Volunteer to sign for packages or water plants for your neighbor if they&amp;#39;re going on vacation.

20. Learn your neighbors&amp;#39; birthdays and other holidays they celebrate. Just wishing them a happy birthday or joyous Chinese New Year in passing can mean a lot.

21. Organize a neighborhood fundraiser or meal train for anyone in your neighborhood facing financial or medical challenges.&amp;nbsp;

    <description>Three easy ways to give back to your community in the New Year

From COVID-19 to historic wildfires, 2020 was a challenge. It&amp;rsquo;s safe to say we&amp;rsquo;re all ready for a fresh start in 2021, but we recommend ditching the&amp;nbsp;traditional New Year&amp;rsquo;s resolution. Instead, resolve to make 2021 great by giving back to Grand County. We have some simple, easy-to-achieve ideas to help you start the New Year on a charitable note. They&amp;#39;re so easy you don&amp;#39;t need to change out of sweatpants for any of them ... unless, of course, you&amp;#39;d like an excuse to dress up.

Do your online shopping with Amazon Smile

Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, we&amp;rsquo;re shopping online more than ever these days. But online shopping can be more than just convenient. It can help support charities like the Grand Foundation.

Through the Amazon Smile program, 0.5% of your eligible purchases will be donated to a charitable organization of your choice. Plus, you can choose to buy an item off a participating charity&amp;rsquo;s AmazonSmile wishlist. It&amp;rsquo;s as easy as going to smile.amazon.com to shop.

Give blood, save lives

Most of us have more blood then we need and can save lives by donating a little excess. Did you know we can physically donate blood every 56 days? Giving blood just once this year could save up to three lives. You may have to head down the hill and into the city but you can find blood drives through the American Red Cross.

Volunteer your time &amp;hellip; virtually

Although in-person volunteer opportunities might be limited thanks to COVID-19, the need for volunteers is greater than ever. From writing grants to tutoring via Zoom, you can make a difference from the comfort of your own home by volunteering virtually. Contact your favorite local charity or visit grandvolunteers.org to find volunteer opportunities.

Happy New Year, Grand County! We wish you all the best in 2021 and thank you for your ongoing support.

    <title>Grand County Wildfire Emergency Fund: Finding Hope Amidst Adversity</title>
    <link>https://grandfoundation.dnn4less.net/News/ID/24/Grand-County-Wildfire-Emergency-Fund-Finding-Hope-Amidst-Adversity</link>
    <description>One of the most redeeming qualities of Grand County, Colorado, is its ability to come together during adversity. Now more than ever, Grand County needs your support.

The Grand Foundation has established the Grand County Wildfire Emergency Fund to support the needs of Grand County residents who have been evacuated, displaced, or have lost their homes during the Grand County wildfires. 100% of donations will be distributed locally to those in need.

The East Troublesome Fire has devastated Grand Lake and continues to threaten Granby, CO, Hot Sulphur Springs, and surrounding areas. The fire started on Wednesday, October 14th, and grew six times its size in 24 hours, engulfing more than 125,000 acres as of noon on Thursday.

The speed, size, and location of the fire have forced evacuations and the closure of Rocky Mountain National Park and many surrounding roads. Several Grand County residents have lost their homes. Weather, terrain, and beetle-kill lodgepole pine have contributed to the growth of this fire, which has led to the East Troublesome Fire achieving the title of the fourth-largest wildfire in Colorado history.

As fires continue to burn, volunteer organizations are on the ground providing critical support for victims and emergency responders. The lives of our Grand County residents, and those fighting for them, have been turned upside overnight with little to no warning. They need our support now.

Donate to the Grand County Wildfire Emergency Fund

Grand County residents should sign up for CodeRED&amp;nbsp;to receive the latest emergency alerts related to the East Troublesome Fire and other disasters.

    <title>A Lifeline During Difficult Times: The Grand County Emergency Assistance Fund Continues</title>
    <link>https://grandfoundation.dnn4less.net/News/ID/25/A-Lifeline-During-Difficult-Times-The-Grand-County-Emergency-Assistance-Fund-Continues</link>
    <description>When 2020 began, most of us had no idea of the hardships, stress and changes it would bring to our friends and neighbors in Grand County. As challenges remain ongoing, the Grand Foundation has recommitted to funding the Grand County Emergency Assistance Fund to provide a permanent source of relief and assistance to those who need it most.

A Bold Idea

It seems like all of us either faced scary questions like these, or know someone who has:

 How will I pay my rent or mortgage?
 What will we do if my work hours are drastically reduced?
 Is there a way to help my child with all the stress and sadness he/she is experiencing?

As the pandemic took hold, the Grand Foundation asked, What did our community need? What changes could we make to provide relief, right now?

We knew it needed to be collaborative, emergent, and within reach of our most vulnerable residents.

So with $185,000 the Grand County Emergency Assistance Fund was created. Due to the fund&amp;rsquo;s overwhelming success, we&amp;rsquo;ve decided to make the fund permanent, seeding with an additional $20,000, and 100% of all dollars raised will go back to our community.

The fund provides help during times of emergency, such as the pandemic and our current wildfire threat, and work in coordination with the county, local agencies and nonprofits that provide direct services to those who need urgent assistance.

How We Can Help

The fund has provided critical assistance to our vulnerable populations, including youth, seniors, &amp;nbsp;the disabled, people with underlying health conditions, displaced workers and at-risk populations.

We can help provide resources such as:

 rent assistance
 mortgage assistance
 help with utility bills
 groceries/food access
 education support
 behavioral health

How You Can Change Lives in Grand County: Donate

Are you in a position to help your more vulnerable neighbors in Grand County? Your gift doesn&amp;rsquo;t just help folks in crisis&amp;mdash;it builds community.

Your donation will help local families keep their homes, stay warm and safe, put nourishing meals on the table, and get through a difficult time so we can all thrive together. If 100 people donate just $100, we will have enough funds to help families in need for months to come.

100% of all funds go right back out to our community, and any amount helps us continue our work.

    <description>Grand Foundation (GF) has established an Emergency Small Business Assistance Fund in response to community impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in Grand County, CO. In a coordinated and collaborative effort, Grand Foundation will be the fiscal agent for this fund and is working closely with Grand County Commissioners, local towns, chambers and community stakeholders to provide grants for small businesses in need of relief. &amp;ldquo;During this time of need, it&amp;rsquo;s imperative we help protect the individuals in our county by ensuring that they have jobs to return to. &amp;nbsp;These small businesses are the character and backbone of our communities in Grand County&amp;rdquo;, said Megan Ledin, GF Executive Director. Primary focus areas for this funding will include rental, mortgage and utility assistance.&amp;nbsp;

Yesterday Grand County Commissioners committed $100,000 to help seed the fund and proposed a $1 million goal; thereby encouraging other donors to contribute. Commissioner Rich Cimino announced, &amp;ldquo;the support from Grand County will ensure we are working together with our community partners to consolidate funding into a county-wide effort that makes relief accessible quickly to our small businesses in such an uncertain time.&amp;rdquo; GF will house these fiscal sponsorship monies that will be distributed through a criteria-based application process outlined to ensure the future success of our small businesses. GF is pleased to announce that the towns quickly added their support with Granby committing $50,000 and Winter Park another $100,000. &amp;nbsp;

Tips from the Center for Disease Control

Even if you aren&amp;rsquo;t considered &amp;ldquo;high-risk,&amp;rdquo; remember to take care of yourself and stay healthy so you can help others within your community. Here are some tips from the Center for Disease Control to keep yourself and others healthy during the outbreak:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Avoid touching your nose or mouth if you have not washed your hands.

Practice social distancing. Avoid contact with those who are sick and healthy alike to prevent spreading COVID-19 in our community. It is recommended that event organizers (groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more.

Stay home if you are sick unless receiving medical care. Additionally, take these steps if you are sick including calling your doctor ahead of time and staying away from others, even within your household.

    <title>October is Breast Cancer Awareness &amp; Wildfire Prevention Month!</title>
    <link>https://grandfoundation.dnn4less.net/News/ID/33/October-is-Breast-Cancer-Awareness-Wildfire-Prevention-Month</link>
    <description>October is bringing awareness to two devastating events that occur in our community: wildfires and cancer. From a natural disaster to a life-altering disease, Grand County is proud to support the fight against both of these deserving of attention in the month of October &amp;amp; beyond.

Help Protect Our Land from Wildfires

We are lucky to have experienced an above-average snow year, but even an average wildfire season in Colorado means that more than 6,000 fires will likely burn more than 100,000 acres, not including fires on federal lands.&amp;nbsp;The Grand Foundation believes in supporting community awareness, preparedness, and communication to mitigate some of the devastation. Wildfires are often preventable, because many originate from human error. Here are some ways you can help protect our beloved land from ravaging wildfires:

 First and foremost, contact 911, your local fire department, or the park service if you notice an unattended or out-of-control fire.
 Always check your local fire regulations.
 Never leave a fire unattended. When camping, completely extinguish the fire before sleeping or leaving the campsite.
 Do not discard cigarettes, matches, and smoking materials from moving vehicles. Dispose of smoking materials properly. Use an ashtray or a can of sand. Be certain to completely extinguish cigarettes before disposing of them.
 Take the time to clean up dead debris like leaves and tree branches around your house to avoid them catching on fire from stray embers. Repair loose or missing roof shingles to reduce the risk of fire damage from ember penetration.&amp;nbsp;
 Sparks from lawnmowers and power equipment DO start wildfires. Be careful on hot, dry days, and be sure to get your equipment checked regularly.
 Be sure chains and other metal parts aren&amp;rsquo;t dragging from your vehicle&amp;ndash;they throw sparks and be careful driving through or parking on dry grass or brush. Hot exhaust pipes can catch the grass on fire.

Be Wildfire Ready with GCWC

The Grand Foundation is proud to support Grand County Wildfire Council! GCWC is a non-profit, community-based educational outreach program for the residents and visitors of Grand County, Colorado. Their group consists of members from local, state, and federal government agencies, all of Grand County&amp;rsquo;s local fire departments, homeowner groups, local businesses, and concerned citizens.

Their mission: &amp;ldquo;Through education and action, promote wildland fire prevention, preparedness, mitigation, and survival.&amp;rdquo;

Their vision: GCWC will provide a countywide platform that connects practitioners to develop a collective voice to better advocate for wildfire resiliency.

Our Outstanding Fire Departments

Grand County is supported by 5 amazing fire departments. We appreciate all of the work they do in protecting our county from disastrous wildfires! We want to say thank you to the following Fire Departments:

East Grand Fire Protection District

Grand Fire Protection District

Grand Lake Fire Protection District

Hot Sulphur Springs Fire Protection District

Kremmling Fire Protection District

Supporting Those Impacted by Cancer

The Grand Foundation is dedicated to contributing to the fight against cancer and taking care of those in our community impacted by this disease. Here&amp;rsquo;s a recap of some events we participated in last month as well as some amazing nonprofit organizations we support that are doing their part to help cancer patients receive the care they need and deserve.

7th Annual Kickin&amp;#39; it to Cancer

The Grand Foundation raised over $35,000 last month at our annual Kickin&amp;rsquo; it to Cancer kick ball tournament at the Fraser Sports Complex! Thank you to everyone who sponsored a team, spectated and participated in our silent auction. We enjoyed some fierce competition and a full crowd for the kids&amp;rsquo; kickball game. Not to mention great food, refreshments, a bake sale, prizes, a silent auction, music, kids&amp;#39; games, and face painting! All proceeds benefit the Brammer Family Fund, a Grand Foundation fund assisting Grand County Families affected by Cancer.

Taking Steps to End all Cancer 5k Race

The Mountain Family Center worked up a sweat for a great cause on September 24th. Many participants were accessorized in pink and ready to race! The race was a day to come together and remember all of our loved ones who did not make it, who have survived, and who are still fighting this disease. All proceeds went to the Mountain Family Center Cancer Fund where Grand County patients with any type of cancer are provided with cancer-related services.

Mountain Family Center Cancer Fund

The Mountain Family Center Cancer Fund exists to ease the financial burden of treatment for Grand County residents battling cancer. Because no cancer treatment is available in the county, patients often must travel long distances, up to several times per week, to receive medical care. Gas, lodging, meals and other expenses can add up, and the Cancer Fund is available to help cover these expenses. Assistance is available regardless of income or insurance status.

Rural Health Network Patient Navigator Program

Grand County Rural Health Network believes everyone has the right to healthcare and to understand how to access that care.&amp;nbsp;That&amp;rsquo;s why they offer a Patient Navigator Program for cancer patients. They coordinate care and work with you or your loved ones battling cancer to guide you through the healthcare system&amp;nbsp;and to community resources to help you get the care you need, when you need it.

    <title>5 Ways Giving Can Give Back</title>
    <link>https://grandfoundation.dnn4less.net/News/ID/45/5-Ways-Giving-Can-Give-Back</link>
    <description>We all know giving is a fantastic way to help those in need. But, did you know giving is also excellent for your health and happiness? Let&amp;rsquo;s check out 5 reasons why giving can help you too!

Get Happy
Giving to someone in need is a great way to get that warm, fuzzy feeling immediately. But, did you know there are long-term benefits to your happiness as well? In their 2008 study, Harvard Business School professor, Michael Norton, and his colleagues found giving money to someone else lifted participants&amp;rsquo; happiness more than spending it on themselves.

Are these feelings tied to biology? In a 2006 study, Jorge Moll and his colleagues at the National Institutes of Health found when people give to charities, it activates regions of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection, and trust, creating a &amp;ldquo;warm glow&amp;rdquo; effect. Scientists believe altruistic behaviors release endorphins in the brain, producing the positive feeling known as the &amp;ldquo;helper&amp;rsquo;s high.&amp;rdquo;

Get Healthy
Giving is good for your health. So good, in fact, that according to a study published in the&amp;nbsp;International Journal of Psychophysiology, people who gave social support to others had lower blood pressure than people who didn&amp;rsquo;t. Similar studies have also found the following health benefits associated with giving:

 Lower&amp;nbsp;blood pressure
 Increased self-esteem
 Less&amp;nbsp;depression
 Lower stress levels
 Longer life
 Greater happiness

Get Connected
When you give, you&amp;rsquo;re more likely to get something back&amp;mdash;sometimes by the person you gave to and sometimes by someone else. Several studies have suggested when you give to others, your generosity is likely to be rewarded by others down the line. When we give to others, we don&amp;rsquo;t only make them feel closer to us; we also feel closer to them.

These exchanges promote a sense of trust and cooperation which strengthens our ties to others&amp;mdash;and research has shown that having positive social interactions is central to good mental and physical health.

Become Contagious&amp;nbsp;
Much like a yawn or laughter, giving can be contagious too! When we give, we don&amp;rsquo;t only help the immediate recipient of our gift. We also spur a ripple effect of generosity through Grand County. A study by James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego, and Nicholas Christakis of Harvard, published in the&amp;nbsp;Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, show that when one person behaves generously, it inspires observers to behave generously later, toward different people. In fact, the researchers found altruism could spread by three degrees&amp;mdash;from person to person to person to person and so on and so forth.

Live Longer
Can you really live longer from giving? Apparently, yes! According to a University of California, Berkeley, study, people 55 and older who volunteered for two or more organizations were 44 percent less likely to die over a five-year period than those who didn&amp;rsquo;t volunteer. The study also accounted for many other factors including age, exercise, general health and negative habits like smoking. Researchers believe one reason giving may improve physical health and longevity is it helps decrease stress, which is associated with a myriad of health issues. So, don&amp;rsquo;t forget: Give to live!

Whether you donate your time, money, or both your giving is much more than community service. It may help you build stronger social connections and even jumpstart an outpouring of generosity through Grand County. And don&amp;rsquo;t be surprised if you find yourself benefiting from a big dose of happiness along the way.

    <title>Building Relationships Within Your Community</title>
    <link>https://grandfoundation.dnn4less.net/News/ID/48/Building-Relationships-Within-Your-Community</link>
    <description>There&amp;rsquo;s no greater feeling than knowing you&amp;rsquo;re making a difference. As individuals, we&amp;rsquo;re limited as to what we can give. That&amp;rsquo;s why it&amp;rsquo;s imperative for businesses to give back as well. But, did you know giving back to your community is also good for business?

You might find yourself asking: what if I don&amp;rsquo;t own a business? That&amp;rsquo;s fine! Maybe you know someone who does own a business or perhaps your own employer could benefit from philanthropic efforts. Take note and give back to your community by sharing these key points.

Give Meaning to Your Work
In today&amp;rsquo;s highly competitive market, companies who have embraced philanthropy as a core business practice have found they reap rewards far beyond dollars and cents. Many companies invest millions of dollars each year into marketing, product development, and technology to improve profitability and grow their customer base. But, giving back to what you&amp;#39;re passionate about gives meaning to your efforts and connects with your potential customers. Philanthropy lets your customers know you care about the greater good and not just your bottom-line.

Build Awareness for Your Brand &amp;amp; Cause
In the day and age of social entrepreneurship, philanthropy is a great way to build awareness for your brand and cause. One example of this is the NFL&amp;rsquo;s partnership with The United Way. The NFL Play 60 program, in conjuncture with the United Way, focuses on giving kids access to healthy food options and regular physical activity to help them perform better in school and in life. Through partnership, both the NFL and United Way are able to increase their reach to grow their brands. And, let&amp;rsquo;s face it, good corporate citizens want to do business with others who share their values.

Build Relationships With Your Customers
It&amp;rsquo;s no secret, consumers prefer interacting with organizations they respect. By working with your local community through philanthropic work, businesses can establish a brand people feel good about. Volunteering, sponsoring an event or donating creates an opportunity for direct interaction with your local customer base and allows you to build relationships, get feedback, and increase awareness in a positive way for your business.

Engage With Your Employees
Last, but certainly not least: your employees. Employees who believe in their organization&amp;rsquo;s mission are more likely to invest more into their work. Setting up philanthropic projects for employees can inspire workers, promote an environment of giving, and create some of the best brand ambassadors for your company.

Give Today, learn how

Become a Corporate Partner, learn how

    <title>10 Ways to Plan Your Giving this Upcoming Year</title>
    <link>https://grandfoundation.dnn4less.net/News/ID/49/10-Ways-to-Plan-Your-Giving-this-Upcoming-Year</link>
    <description>2017 has officially come to a close and 2018 has kicked it into high gear. As we look forward to what the New Year holds, one event pops front and center: Tax Season. That&amp;rsquo;s right, the Internal Revenue Service designated January 29th as the official start date to the new tax season.

With the new changes to the tax law, it&amp;rsquo;s hard to know what&amp;rsquo;s best when it comes to donating your time or hard earned money.&amp;nbsp; That&amp;rsquo;s why we thought it pertinent to let you know the ways you could give this year to help yourself next year. So, without further ado, here are 10 ways you can plan your giving to not only help yourself, but your community as well.

10 ways you can plan your giving for the upcoming year:

Time &amp;ndash;Time is the most important commodity there is and nobody&amp;rsquo;s time is more important than yours. We know life is chaotic and while volunteering may not be tax deductible it is one of the best ways to make an immediate and lasting impact.

General Contribution &amp;ndash; Apart from volunteering, the gift of cash is one of the most popular ways to give. It&amp;rsquo;s simple, it&amp;rsquo;s easy, and it makes an instant impact.

Donor Advised Funds - When you donate to a donor-advised fund, you&amp;#39;re making a tax-deductible donation to the Grand Foundation, but because it&amp;rsquo;s a donor-advised fund, you advise us on how to grant the money to your favorite charity(s).&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;

Marketable securities - These securities are often individual stock, but may also be bonds or shares of Mutual Funds. Gifting securities is quick and easy. If you sell the security, rather than donating it, part of your proceeds will go to Uncle Sam. But, by gifting the security, you eliminate your capital gains tax exposure and take a charitable deduction in the amount of the fair market value of the shares, ensuring the charity of your choice receives the maximum benefit of your donation.

Real estate - When appreciated real estate is gifted to us, such as a 2nd home or vacation property, capital gains taxes can be completely avoided and the full market value of the property is generally deductible as a charitable contribution. Skip Uncle Sam and gift the full appreciated value to your charity of choice.

Estate Plan - By adding the Grand Foundation to your estate plan or your will, we can help you realize your philanthropic goals. There are several tools available to make a lasting gift to support Grand County for years.

Groswold Endowment Fund - The Groswold Endowment Fund was the wish of our Founder, Jerry Groswold. His desire for this fund was to continue the tradition of the Grand Foundation by investing in Grand County and its nonprofits. This can ensure future sustainability of the Grand Foundation and our commitment of investment

Life Insurance - Do you have a permanent life insurance policies no longer needed for their original purpose? Or do you want to find a way to give more than you have?&amp;nbsp; A gift of a permanent life insurance policy can provide a tax deduction the year it is gifted. If you purchase a whole life insurance policy for $10,000 annually, you will only fiscally contribute $150,000 before the policy starts paying for itself (roughly 15 years). However, when you pass, you will be gifting anywhere from $.5 to $1 million to the charity of your choice. A whole life insurance policy is a great way to give much more than you contribute.&amp;nbsp;

Retirement Assets - This a great option for charitable gift planning. By using retirement assets to fund your charitable bequest (and leaving other assets to family members,) you may be able to reduce tax liabilities and leave more to your beneficiaries.

Grand Pass &amp;ndash; While purchasing the Grand Pass may not be a tax deduction, it is a perfect way to explore all that Grand County has to offer and contribute to its future at the same time! With passes to 8 different ski resorts, 4 rounds of, summer activities passes and more, there&amp;rsquo;s something to keep you entertained year round. Best of all, the proceeds go towards the Grand Foundation.

Regardless of how you choose to plan your giving for the upcoming year, one thing is clear: we need your help. You may not be able to do anything about last year&amp;rsquo;s tax burden, but planning now will help for the future. Because of the tax benefits provided by congress, you can give different kinds of assets, give them in different ways, and strategically plan so that you can do more for Grand County while doing more for yourself. Plan to give this year!

    <title>We Are Thankful for Grand County!</title>
    <link>https://grandfoundation.dnn4less.net/News/ID/50/We-Are-Thankful-for-Grand-County</link>
    <description>Thanksgiving celebrations, as we know them today, would be almost unrecognizable to the original attendees of the 1621 harvest meal. Thanksgiving does, however, continue to be a day for Americans to get together around the table and share what they&amp;rsquo;re most thankful for. The Grand Foundation is no exception. This year, we want to reflect on the people, places, and things we are most thankful for.

&amp;bull;&amp;nbsp;Jerry Groswold, the former longtime Winter Park CEO and Grand Foundation Founder, had as much to do with the growth and success of Winter Park and the surrounding Grand County area as anybody. Jerry dedicated his life to his passion for skiing and service, and for that we are thankful.

&amp;bull;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;The Ski Train, now called the Winter Park Express, ran continuously from 1940-2009. However, when loses proved too big the service was eventually shut down only to run on a few special occasions. Thankfully, the service has been restored making Winter Park the only ski town accessible by rail in Colorado.

&amp;bull; Who could forget about Skiing! Grand Country has a rich tradition for the sport and was one of the first areas in Colorado to enjoy the sport of skiing. Grand Lake&amp;#39;s own Jim Harsh became the first Coloradoan to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team. Since then, a strong record of winning high school ski teams in Grand County has accounted for a remarkable number of skiers who would then go on to take part on U.S. Olympic teams.

&amp;bull;&amp;nbsp;The Western White Houses (The Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, Lowry Air Force Base, &amp;amp; Byer&amp;rsquo;s Peak Ranch) were affectionately known as such because of the time spent there by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. President Eisenhower met and married his wife, Mamie Doud of Denver, in July of 1916. When at Byer&amp;rsquo;s Peak Ranch, President Eisenhower would rest and refocus himself to face the many political issues of his time. Some of President Eisenhower&amp;rsquo;s favorite past times were cooking for guests at the Ranch, fishing the St. Louis Creek and having &amp;quot;brookies&amp;quot; (brook trout) for breakfast.

&amp;bull; In 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park became America&amp;rsquo;s 10th national park. The park&amp;rsquo;s west entrance, located just a couple minutes from Grand Lake, is possibly the parks&amp;rsquo; best-kept secret. And, here&amp;rsquo;s a fun fact: Trail Ridge Road, completed in 1932, is the highest continuous highway in the United States.

Lastly, it is only through your support and the support of the Grand County Community that any of this is possible in the first place. Grand County has a history giving back and working to make the community stronger with each passing day. It is the amazing people of this community that we are most thankful for.

Sincerely,

The Grand Foundation

    <title>You Should Always Give Back More Than You Take</title>
    <link>https://grandfoundation.dnn4less.net/News/ID/51/You-Should-Always-Give-Back-More-Than-You-Take</link>
    <description>Jerry Groswold lived his life according to a few basic principles. Take care of your own, family is important, people are important, but things are not, and you should always give back more than you take. It&amp;rsquo;s the last principle that has truly led to Jerry&amp;rsquo;s lasting legacy not only as a titan of the Colorado&amp;nbsp;Ski Industry and Winter Park, but also as a community leader and visionary.

At its dedication ceremonies in 1940, Winter Park Ski Area, then a Denver owned mountain park, consisted of only three formal ski trails. Originally designed to allow people to come ski for the day, Winter Park is now the longest continually operated ski resort in the state of Colorado. And, a large part of that is due to Jerry. Jerry was appointed President and CEO of Winter Park, a position he held for over 22 years. During his time, he oversaw one of the largest ski area expansions in Colorado history with the development of the Mary Jane Mountain.&amp;nbsp; He also oversaw the development of the Vasquez and Parsenn expansions, and the master planning for the Winter Park Village.

But, Jerry&amp;rsquo;s legacy will be forever tied to the creation of programs that gave back more than they took. The first of these was the Winter Park Handicapped Program, which evolved into the National Sports Center for the Disabled. His passion for making the sport of skiing accessible to thousands of people with disabilities is what drove him to become the Team Leader for the first U.S. Disabled Olympics team to compete in the 1980 Winter Paralympics.

Jerry&amp;rsquo;s generosity didn&amp;rsquo;t stop there. In 1996, he helped found the Grand Foundation. The foundation was created to improve the quality of community in Grand County by providing funding for non-profits and their programs. Upon his passing, the Groswold Endowment Fund, a fund of the Grand Foundation was created as the wish of our Founder, Jerry Groswold. His desire was to continue the tradition of the Grand Foundation by investing in our community and its nonprofits. In 2016, Jerry Growswold left a matching challenge bequest of $250,000 to support an Endowment Fund for the Grand Foundation.

Today, the Grand Foundation aims to raise a minimum of $250,000, in order to receive Jerry&amp;#39;s match, for a total of $500,000 to sustain the Grand Foundation for future generations.
